Grey, wet, dreary days need …

One of our Top 10 fun things to do on a rainy day

Inspired by a recent run of rainy and windy days, I figured it was a good time to share the fun things we do when the weather is less than ideal.

Of course this list doesn’t include commitments like work or school as those are just necessities. On that note, here are the Top 10 Things we like to do on rainy days . . .

Players from the MUFC U15 boys team practice on a rainy Sunday in beautiful Huntsville, Ontario.

Play soccer (or any outdoor sport). Seriously. Running and kicking a ball around, sliding on the grass, getting dirty and sweaty and wet. It’s beautiful.

Go for walk or a hike. Dress appropriately and venture out into the rain. Probably best to do in the warm summer rains, but still a wonderful experience.

Listen to the rain fall. One of the most peaceful things in the world to me is sit and listen to the rain hit the roof, the windows, the ground and anything else. Drop after drop. It can be very relaxing and rejuvenating when combined with quality breathing techniques.

Check off the Honey-Do List. Bathroom needs painting? Furnace filters need changing? What about doing some purging of unneeded items (especially those that can be donated)? The Honey-Do list usually has at least one thing on it that can be started and even completed on a rainy day.

Read a book. Or even a quality magazine with good features. Either way, take some time to stimulate your mental muscle a little. You’ll feel better for it. This is especially good advice for those who don’t read everyday.

Write a story. Or poetry, or a journal, or anything really. Heck even making a series of business notes and to do lists is a good way to get motivated to do more. I write for a living, but do tend to enjoy it more on rainy days for some strange reason.

Art, Art, & More Art. My daughter and I love to draw, paint and create pieces of art on any given day. When it’s raining, it’s a fantastic way to enjoy some quality time and just let our idea go crazy on paper or canvas.

Break out a board game. Family all home with nothing to do and unappealing weather outside, then break out a board game like Monopoly, Life, Trivial Pursuit or even get some Chess going to really challenge each other.

Play cards. Whether it’s Crazy 8s, Euchre, or another standard card game, you can usually have hours of fun. Alone, then of course Solitaire is the best. For our family, we bust out the Italian cards, break into pairs and have some Scopa and Briscola fun.

Watch a movie or binge a series. Probably the thing people do the most on rainy days is sit around, eat too much, watch movies and/or binge a series. We left it for last because there are so many more stimulating and healthy things to do. But, every once in a while, a lazy day at home is the perfect medicine. Need some ideas, we’ve got you covered: Binge on this!
