Hoyas win MPS Soccer title and boys’ volleyball results

The Huntsville Hoyas boys’ soccer team once again won the Muskoka-Parry Sound championship on Tuesday, October 17 with wins over Bracebridge-Muskoka Lakes Lakers and St. Dominic Dragons.

 In the semi-finals (and AA qualifying final), the Hoyas were resounding winners by a score of 4-0 over the Lakers with Wyatt Heffernen making some great saves enroute to the clean sheet (shutout).

Rowan Simpson, Johnny Fiorini and Callahan Alexander scored for the Hoyas, who were also the beneficiaries of an own goal by the Lakers, in the win that qualified them for the AA GBSAA playoffs on October 27 in Barrie. The winner of that tournament will represent the region at OFSAA in North Bay in the spring of 2024.

In the other MPS semi-final, and A GBSAA qualifier, the Dragons won in a penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw with the Almaguin Highlanders in regulation time. The star of the show was Dragons’ goalkeeper Holden Vuksan, who scored the first penalty kick and made three saves in the shootout. St. Dom’s will play in the GBSAA A tournament on October 27.

In the final, which was ended a few minutes early, the Hoyas were deserving 2-0 winners to become champions. Zach Caplan scored twice for Huntsville and goalkeeper Kai Doughty stopped a penalty kick in the win.

Coaches Jeff Young and Kevin Quinn were pleased with the Hoyas efforts and will be busy this week getting them ready for their big challenge in Barrie at the GBSAA finals.

Boys Volleyball scores

In boys’ volleyball action this week, The Gravenhurst Gryphons junior boys team beat the Hoyas junior boys 3-1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-23, 25-9), meanwhile the Hoyas senior boys swept the Gryphons senior boys 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-9).
