SPCA fundraiser supports caring for animals who are in need of a loving home

Cupcake isn’t just a fantastic dessert or a great name for a furry friend – well, it’s both of those things – but it’s also the focus of an Ontario SPCA fundraiser taking place throughout February.

While the actual Cupcake Day for the SPCA in 2024 is on February 26, the fundraising campaign has already started with individuals, teams and businesses getting the ball rolling (or is it a rolling pin moving?).

The way it works is pretty simple. Go online to cupcakeday.ca and follow the instructions to register: pick an Animal Centre to sponsor, set up a fundraising page, and start baking.

Leslie Barrie, Community Outreach Coordinator for the OSPCA Muskoka Animal Centre, says it’s never too late or too early to join in the Cupcake Day fundraiser.

“It’s the sweetest day of the year and we need people to raise some dough to help animals in the community,” she says. “Cupcake Day can be celebrated any day in February, but it officially takes place Feb. 26. Getting involved is a piece of cake! Plan a cupcake party, get baking, and raise funds in support of animals in need.”

As well, Barrie notes that while Cupcake Day officially takes place Feb. 26, there are those who will be hosting cupcake parties on another date that works better for their circle. They will be asking their guests to donate to the Ontario SPCA Animal Centre of their choice in exchange for a cupcake.

Those who want to help but aren’t interested in participating in the Cupcake Day fundraiser, can support by donating to an individual, team or company – or directly to the SPCA itself.

Why are donations necessary? The answer is simple: as a registered charity that does not receive annual government funding, the Ontario SPCA depends on the generosity of donors to provide urgently needed care and shelter for animals waiting to find a loving home.
