Sixes Up!

The 6 x 6 x Six art show has one new artist and 36 great works for sale – in time for Mother’s Day

Last year Helena Renwick brought together five of her fellow artists for the first annual 6 x 6 x Six art show.

Six artists painting six paintings each on six by six canvases for an art show and sale being hosted at the Huntsville Festival of the Arts Studio (across from River Mill Park) in Downtown Huntsville.

For the second annual event, the location is the same, but there are a couple of differences, including Bracebridge artist Serena West replacing Marike McDonald (who has moved west), and a new day and time – May 4, 2024 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Including Renwick, the other returning artists are Sylvia Kerschl, Stephanie Aykroyd, Roxanne Driedger, and Meghan Irvine.

They will have their 36 combined paintings displayed together, while some larger pieces will also be hanging in a different space at the studio.

“Last year 95 percent of the paintings sold, which is fantastic,” says Renwick. “The paintings are mostly landscapes that are inspired by the natural Muskoka environment and Algonquin Park.”

Each artwork will be available for purchased at a price of $125 plus tax (cash or e-transfer), with funds generated going directly to the artist.

“It’s a very reasonable price to help make it affordable for more people to own a piece of original, locally create artwork,” explains Renwick. “Even if you don’t find something that strikes you, being in a room full of art is a very different experience from seeing it online – it’s special.”

Humble Beginnings

Renwick’s idea for the 6 x 6 x Six show began several years ago during her fight against cancer (she is doing very well) as she painted 30 paintings in 30 days and hosted a show to exhibit and sell those works.

“I did that show, it was lovely, it was one night only … I did a second one in 2019 and again it was just me,” she fondly recalls.

Having enjoyed those experiences, Renwick decided it was time to do another one. But, she didn’t want to do it alone again.

In keeping symmetry alive and well, she invited five friends from the Huntsville Art Society to join her (making six artists), and all agreed to only paint on six-by-six canvases. And the 6 x 6 by Six Art Show was born.

“It’s just a cute size of canvas to paint on,” explains Renwick. “It’s just a number that worked out that way.”

Those visiting will be treated to quality artwork, some light refreshments, and a great atmosphere with some ambient music playing.

Those interested in any particular paintings will need to be at the show to purchase the one they are looking for as there will not be a pre-sale this time around.

“Our show is also a week before Mother’s Day, so it’s the perfect place to find a beautiful gift for mom,” says Renwick. “Everyone is welcome to stop by, meet the artists, enjoyment refreshments and perhaps find a new piece for their collection.”
